High El Nino heat puts farmers in South Africa on high alert

Heat and drought linked to El Nino are forcing farmers in South Africa to adapt as extreme weather threatens crops and livestock. At an urban farm in Soweto, lettuce has been damaged by high temperatures and rabbits have died from the heat. Forecasters warn that much of southern Africa could face droughts, heat waves and disrupted rainfall through early 2027. Farmers are responding with new techniques to conserve water, protect crops and grow more heat-resilient plants to safeguard food production.
