THE Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) warned Filipinos visiting or transiting through India that carrying unauthorized satellite phones and satellite-enabled navigation equipment could result in heavy fines and potential prison time.

It said that under Indian maritime and telecommunications regulations, the possession and use of satellite phones — including popular networks such as Thuraya and Iridium — as well as specialized GPS devices without prior permission from Indian authorities are strictly forbidden.

The DFA said that travelers carrying satellite communication gear must declare the devices immediately upon arrival at Indian ports of entry.

Customs authorities will only release satellite devices if the owner presents a valid license issued by India’s Department of Telecommunications. Without proper authorization, importation or transit of these electronics is illegal.

India maintains strict security controls over satellite equipment to prevent unauthorized radio transmissions within its national borders and territorial waters, a policy enforced rigorously across international airports and maritime ports.

The DFA said violators could face imprisonment of up to three years and fines up to 20 million Indian rupees (approximately P13.35 million).

The DFA said Filipinos who need assistance in India should communicate through the following hotlines and email addresses: New Delhi (Calls/WhatsApp/Viber) +91 9910797014

Email: [email protected] Mumbai +91 33228 08846

Email: [email protected] Kolkata +91 33228 08846
