A heartwarming story of loyalty and survival has gone viral on social media after a group of seven dogs were filmed making an extraordinary journey home across north-eastern China.

The pack members—said to include a corgi, a golden retriever, a Labrador retriever, a German shepherd and a Pekinese dog among others—were spotted traveling together along a busy highway in Changchun, Jilin province.

Footage circulating on social media shows the dogs moving together with purpose, navigating traffic on their own as they made their way back to familiar ground.

According to local reports and widely shared social-media posts, the canines are believed to have been taken from their owners and transported away illegally. What happened next, however, has been described by many viewers as nothing short of extraordinary.

The animals are said to have escaped captivity by chewing through a cage inside the vehicle.

From there, they began a 17-kilometre [10.5-mile] journey spanning highways and fields, traveling together as a tight-knit group. Observers online have been particularly struck by what appears to be strong coordination within the pack.

One dog—a corgi—has been singled out in several accounts as the group’s leader. In a viral video, the corgi is said to repeatedly look back, as if checking that no one was left behind, before continuing forward. The behavior has been widely interpreted as a sign of awareness and responsibility within the group dynamic.

Equally notable are claims about how the dogs responded to adversity during the journey. Some reports suggest the German shepherd sustained an injury, prompting the rest of the pack to slow down, stay close and offer protection as they continued.

According to the South China Morning Post, the local Bitter Coffee Stray Dog Base reported that the animals were familiar with one another, having come from the same village and regularly interacted before their disappearance.

To help the canines through their journey, the base is said to have dispatched several volunteers and a drone to track them on the way and make sure they made it home safely.

A volunteer alleged that individuals involved in the dog meat trade had taken the canines, suggesting that the animals might have gotten loose from a truck, although no one actually saw their departure.

Based on the timeline pieced together from various videos and reports, the dogs are believed to have escaped on March 16 and completed their journey two days later, returning to their respective homes by March 18.

Reports indicate that all seven animals have since been reunited safely with their owners.
