A woman who only planned to adopt one cat was stunned by what she saw when she arrived at the shelter—and it was enough to drastically change her plans.
TikTok user @yeahstef shared a heartwarming clip online showing the reason she ended up with two cats rather than just one. The video captures a pair of feline brothers curled up tightly together, gently grooming each other inside their shelter enclosure. Text layered over the clip explains that @yeahstef initially intended to adopt only one cat, but when she “saw him and his brother chasing each other,” she “couldn’t bear the thought of separating them.”
The siblings’ close bond was enough to convince the adopter that they belonged together. Rather than leave one behind, @yeahstef made the decision to adopt both cats so they could stay together for good.
The TikTok user, who is based in Los Angeles, California, said the adoption took place five years ago. She noted in the caption that the brothers are still “as bonded as ever,” suggesting that the decision to keep them together has paid off in the long term.
The clip quickly struck a chord with viewers. Since it was posted on March 20, the video has garnered more than 430,600 views and 127,300 likes on TikTok at the time of writing. Many internet users praised the cat owner for making space in her home for both animals rather than separating a bonded pair.
Newsweek has contacted @yeahstef via TikTok for comment. The details of the video could not be verified.
Stories like this shine a light on the ongoing pressure animal shelters face across the United States. According to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA), approximately 5.8 million cats and dogs entered U.S. shelters and rescues in 2024, with cats accounting for a significant portion of that total. The ASPCA reports that around 2.9 million cats enter shelters each year, and while millions are adopted annually, shelters remain overcrowded, making successful adoptions particularly vital.
There’s little doubt that @yeahstef is happy with the decision she made. She described the adoption as her “best decision ever,” adding that while she never expected to become a two‑cat household, she wouldn’t change a thing.
In recent weeks, many TikTok users took to the comments to praise @yeahstef’s decision to keep the bonded brothers together. Fellow cat owners also shared their own adoption stories, leading to more than 830 comments on the video so far.
One commenter wrote: “Two cats is ALWAYS better than one. And three is always better than two.”
Another TikTok user added: “Thank you SO much for keeping them together. Bonded litter mates are so cute.”
Another comment reads: “It makes me so happy they get to live the rest of their life loved and together.”
While one viewer said: “You made the greatest choice taking both of them, even though I know they were a handful at times.”
