Owner Returns to Groomer—Not Prepared For What They’ve Done to Her Dog

When a pet parent returned to pick up her dog from a grooming appointment, she expected a fluffy makeover, but the one who walked out left her questioning if she had the right canine.

Sade’, who posts on TikTok as @sadetdiaz, told Newsweek via TikTok that she requested a classic poodle cut for her 1-year-old dog, Cooper. She even brought inspirational photos. But when the groomer came back with a nearly shaved pup, the transformation was so dramatic that she momentarily questioned his identity.

Her TikTok video, posted December 28, shows Cooper before the appointment with long, curly locks of brown fur. But the Cooper she got back was nothing but a shaved-down canine.

“I was in so much shock, all I could do was laugh because it’s my natural response to anything when I’m uncomfortable,” she said. “I had to look him in the eyes to verify he was my dog. He has two different-colored eyes, so I was like, ‘Yep, that’s my dog.'”

Despite the surprise, Sade’ said the experience highlighted a gap in Cooper’s at-home care: brushing.

“In my care at home, I would bathe him and blow-dry him, not realizing I was missing the important step of brushing him out,” she said. “I let his hair grow out long because I love it when he’s fluffy, but when I got him back, I didn’t even recognize him.”

Because of the lack of brushing, her groomer explained that Cooper was “too matted” and needed to be shaved down so his coat could start fresh. For Sade’, it became an instant lesson. In her caption, she wrote: “I’m traumatized!! I will be brushing him daily from now on because who is this even.”

Why Groomers Shave Severely Matted Coats

Although many owners request specific grooming styles, professionals sometimes have no choice but to shave a dog when the coat is heavily matted. Matted fur isn’t just a cosmetic issue—it can pose serious health risks.

Mats can pull tightly on the skin, causing pain, bruising, sores or hematomas, and can trap moisture, dirt, bacteria and parasites, increasing the risks of infections and skin irritation, according to an article from the Preventive Vet. Severe mats, sometimes referred to as “pelted” coats, can also restrict movement and block airflow to the skin. Attempting to brush or comb out the tangles can be extremely painful and may even tear the dog’s fragile skin, which is why professionals avoid trying to de-mat severe tangles.

When mats are widespread or close to the skin, groomers typically opt for a close shave to avoid pain, as well as clipper burns or accidental cuts that can occur when trying to work through tight mats. Poodles are especially prone to tangles as their hair grows, making routine brushing and regular professional grooming essential. Owners should select breed-specific brushes for their dogs, as different coats require specific tools to prevent matting.

‘You Live and Learn’

As of Wednesday, the TikTok video had reached over 30,300 views, 595 likes and 135 comments, with many viewers empathizing with the situation and explaining why the groomer shaved Cooper.

“That matted undercoat will get you every time,” one user said.

Another added: “The next appointment, he will look like what you pictured, but he was matted, don’t wait too long, and brush every day.”

Understanding her pain, someone chimed in: “I was not prepared for the doodle fur upkeep. He had to get shaved down a couple of times, too. You live and learn!”
