TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A simple walk, when done regularly, can provide incredible health benefits. Walking not only refreshes the mind and improves mood, but also has a positive impact on several aspects of our body's health.
Citing health.harvard.edu, the following are five benefits of walking that not many people are aware of:
1. Counteracts the effects of weight-gaining genes
Harvard researchers examined 32 obesity-promoting genes in more than 12,000 people to determine how much these genes actually contribute to body weight. Among participants who walked briskly for about an hour a day, the effects of these genes were cut by half.
2. Controls and lessens craving for sweet foods
Research from the University of Exeter found that walking for 15 minutes can curb chocolate cravings. Recent studies confirm that walking can reduce cravings and consumption of a variety of sugary snacks.
4. Reduces the risk of breast cancer
Any type of physical activity can reduce the risk of breast cancer. An American Cancer Society study that focused on walking found that women who walked seven or more hours a week had a 14% lower risk of breast cancer than those who walked three or fewer hours a week. Walking provided this protection even for women with breast cancer risk factors, such as being overweight or using hormone replacement therapy.
5. Eases joint pains
Several studies have found that walking reduces the pain associated with arthritis and may even prevent arthritis from developing in the first place. Walking protects the joints - especially the knees and hips, which are most susceptible to osteoarthritis.
6. Boosts immunity
Walking may offer protection during cold and flu season. A study of more than 1,000 men and women found that those who walked at least 20 minutes a day had 43% fewer sick days than those who exercised once a week or less.
