TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Sony Pictures has secured a new three-year deal with Destin Daniel Cretton, the director of Spider-Man: Brand New Day. The deal follows the film’s major box office success and has sparked questions about whether Cretton could return for the next Spider-Man movie.
According to Yahoo! Entertainment, Cretton will develop several films through his production company, Hisako Films, under the agreement. The deal expands Cretton’s relationship with Sony following the major success of Spider-Man: Brand New Day.
The film has become one of the highest-grossing sequels, earning more than US$2.45 billion worldwide. Brand New Day broke domestic box office records and received positive responses from critics and audiences alike. It boasts a 97 percent audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.
However, the new deal does not guarantee that Cretton will direct the next film. Sony is reportedly interested in bringing him back to direct Spider-Man's fifth installment. However, there has been no official confirmation of his return.
In a statement, Cretton said that he greatly enjoyed working on Brand New Day with the Sony team. “I had the best time making Brand New Day with Tom Rothman, Sanford Panitch and their team, and I’m so excited to tell more meaningful stories that people can experience in theaters around the world,” he said, as quoted by the Hollywood Reporter.
In addition to Spider-Man, Cretton has worked on several other Marvel projects, including the series Wonder Man. He served as co-creator, executive producer, and director of the first two episodes. His next directing project is Lionsgate’s live-action adaptation of Naruto, which is scheduled to begin filming in early 2027.
With the new deal, Cretton will continue developing various projects with Sony. Meanwhile, the future of Spider-Man 5 has yet to be officially announced, including its release date and director.
