Design Recipes: Right size your rug

Choosing the right size rug is often far harder than choosing the right pattern or color. Too often, homeowners make the mistake of choosing an area rug that is too small versus one that is too big. A rug that floats in the middle of a room like a postage stamp can make even beautiful furniture feel disconnected.

The right rug does more than add color and softness; it helps anchor and define a space. Before you buy, here are some top tips for making sure you “right size your rug."

1. Bigger is almost always better

When in doubt, go up a size. A rug that is generous in scale makes a room feel larger and more intentional, while a small rug tends to shrink the space around it.

2. Let the furniture touch the rug

In a living room, aim to have at least the front legs of the sofa and chairs sitting on the rug. This simple rule ties the seating group together.

3. Measure the seating area, not the room

Lay out your furniture first, then measure the footprint of the seating arrangement. The rug should cover that footprint with a little room to spare.

4. Leave a good size border of floor

A band of eight to eighteen inches of visible floor between the rug and the walls keeps the rug from looking like wall to wall carpet.

5. Size a dining rug for pulled out chairs

Add roughly 24 inches on all sides of the table so chairs stay on the rug even when someone pushes back from dinner.

6. Extend on both sides of a bed

In a bedroom, the rug should reach 18 to 24 inches beyond each side (this also means extending beyond night stands or side tables) as well as beyond the foot of the bed.

7. Consider runners for narrow spaces

Hallways, galley kitchens and the space beside a bed are ideal for runners. Leave a few inches of floor showing on each side for balance.

8. Tape it out before you buy

Painter's tape on the floor is the easiest way to visualize a rug size. Live with the outline for a day and see how it feels.

9. Layer when the perfect size does not exist

A large natural fiber rug topped with a smaller patterned rug or even a shag can help to add both warmth and texture.

10. Consider an interesting shape

Round rugs can soften a square room or sit beautifully under a round table, while a rectangle generally suits a sofa grouping. These days, oval rugs are also popular.
