Coach Mourinho reveals why Real Madrid missed out on Rodri, who ended up joining Barcelona.

He admitted to having spoken directly with Rodri several times about the possibility of joining Real Madrid. According to the 63-year-old strategist, the Bernabeu club made a substantial offer for the Manchester City midfielder.

The relationship between Real Madrid and Man City was also considered good, so the obstacle didn't lie in the negotiation process between the two clubs. The problem that caused the deal to fall through stemmed from Rodri's indecisive attitude.

“I’ve spoken to Rodri a few times. Real Madrid made a very good offer, but he’s still hesitant. That’s something I have to consider as well,” Mourinho said.

According to coach Mourinho, Real Madrid's stature doesn't allow the club to wait for a player who still has to think twice before moving to the Bernabeu. Despite the impending collaboration, he said Rodri always behaved professionally and wished the midfielder success at Barca.

Rodri's decision to choose Barca makes the rivalry between the two biggest clubs in Spain even more noteworthy ahead of the new season.

Mourinho previously managed Real Madrid from 2010 to 2013. He returned to the club at a time when the team had not won any major titles in the previous two seasons, and had undergone constant personnel changes on the coaching staff.

Nevertheless, Mourinho seemed pleased with the situation in the dressing room. He commented that the Real Madrid players possessed a desire to win, an open spirit, and a professional attitude.

The Portuguese manager believes this will help Real Madrid regain their position quickly, even if they miss out on a key transfer target to Barca.
