This information was revealed at a private launch event held near Chicago (USA) in early June, attracting approximately 180 dealers from the US and Canada.
According to AutoNews, at this event, Mitsubishi presented its long-term development strategy called Momentum 2030, aiming to completely revamp its product portfolio, which has been considered outdated compared to the market for many years.
The biggest highlight of the event was the appearance of a body-on-frame SUV developed from the soon-to-be-revived Mitsubishi Pajero, expected to return to North America under the name Montero. This marks the first time a new Pajero/Montero model has been confirmed for distribution in this market.
This all-new SUV will most likely use a body-on-frame chassis, sharing a platform with the Triton pickup truck, targeting professional off-road capabilities, and could be launched around 2030.
Dealers attending the event compared the new Mitsubishi Montero to the Toyota Land Cruiser, noting its boxy, off-road design, ground clearance of approximately 305mm, and spacious cabin with three rows of seats.
The exterior is striking with its vertically stacked LED headlights at the front and distinctive T-shaped taillights. Unlike previous generations, the side-opening tailgate and external spare tire mounting have been removed, replaced by a more practical, traditional upward-opening tailgate.
The modern cockpit features a digital instrument cluster, a larger infotainment screen, a redesigned steering wheel, and could set the standard for the entire product range. Meanwhile, the Japanese automaker has also confirmed that the new generation Mitsubishi Pajero will launch globally this fall.
In addition to the Montero, Mitsubishi has also revealed information about the next-generation Outlander Sport, expected to launch in the second half of 2028. This model features a complete redesign, larger dimensions, higher ground clearance, and a distinct off-road style with off-road tires, exposed tow hooks, roof rails with integrated ladder, and a rugged front bumper.
Meanwhile, the next-generation Outlander is also confirmed to debut in 2028, moving to an entirely new platform developed in-house by Mitsubishi. Prior to that, a preliminarily revealed off-road-focused Outlander version, expected to launch in 2027, featured improved four-wheel drive, upgraded suspension, and a more robust design.
With this new product line, Mitsubishi is expected to gradually regain its position in the North American market after a prolonged period of declining sales.
