The 2027 Audi Q9 will replace the A8 luxury sedan as the flagship model of the German brand. In addition, the company also announced the new Audi A2 e-tron.

Not long ago, news broke that Audi was discontinuing its flagship luxury sedan, the A8, much to the disappointment of many. Immediately afterward, information about the successor to the A8, the top-of-the-line model for the four-ring brand, was revealed. Unlike usual practice, the Audi A8 will not be replaced by a new luxury sedan. Instead, Audi will launch a completely new luxury SUV called the Q9 to take its place.

This information was revealed by Gernot Döllner, CEO of Audi. Autocar magazine reports that the new Audi Q9 will target markets such as North America, China, and the Middle East, although it will also be sold in the UK. “The new Audi Q9 will strengthen our position in the US and define the pinnacle of our product range,” said Döllner.

According to several sources, the Audi Q9 will be a three-row SUV with an interior configuration of either six or seven seats. In the six-seat version, the vehicle will feature a middle row with two separate, more luxurious executive seats. This places the Audi Q9 in the same segment as models such as the Mercedes-Benz GLS and BMW X7.

The full technical details of the Audi Q9 have not yet been released, but this flagship SUV is expected to use the Premium Platform Combustion (PPC) chassis platform from its parent company Volkswagen.

This Premium Platform Combustion chassis is compatible with a wide range of powertrain options, including the 4.0L turbocharged V8 petrol engine previously featured in Audi models such as the SQ8 and RSQ8.

Vehicles within the same group often share a common chassis platform, and the upcoming Audi Q9 is no exception. The Audi Q9 is expected to share the PPC platform with another upcoming model from the Volkswagen Group: Porsche's flagship 7-seater SUV.

Reportedly codenamed K1, Porsche's new SUV will utilize both V6 and V8 engines. Döllner revealed that the Q9 will be one of two models Audi will launch later this year. The other is the Audi A2 e-tron.

Recently, Audi officially announced the return of the A2 name in the form of the A2 e-tron electric car. Positioned in the mainstream segment, the Audi A2 e-tron is expected to indirectly replace the A1 and Q2 – two models that will end their production runs this year. Expected to be manufactured at Audi's Ingolstadt headquarters, the A2 e-tron contributes to expanding the brand's production lines in Europe and its home country of Germany.

“The A2 e-tron is crucial for our brand and for our home country of Germany. By producing another all-electric vehicle in Ingolstadt, we are securing jobs and providing an electric mobility solution ‘made in Germany’,” said Döllner.

Based on the teaser images released by Audi, the A2 e-tron appears to inherit the design style of its predecessor, featuring a raised floor and relatively spacious headroom. The name starting with "A" instead of "Q" suggests that the car is not positioned as an SUV, despite its considerable overall height.

The official specifications for the Audi A2 e-tron have not yet been released. However, the model is expected to use Volkswagen's MEB platform, similar to the ID.3. The Volkswagen ID.3 currently offers battery options with capacities of 58 kWh and 77 kWh, providing a maximum driving range of up to 546 km according to WLTP standards.
